To reach Adi Kailash from Mumbai and Pune by flight the nearby airport is Pantnagar which takes about 2 hours to reach. From Pantnagar it takes about 8 to 10 hours by road to reach Dharchula which is the last town before Adi Kailash also this route is the fastest way to start the pilgrimage journey.

Take a direct train from Mumbai and Pune to Kathgodam which is near Haldwani or Tanakpur. Kathgodam Railway Station is the most convenient way to reach Adi Kailash pilgrims. It takes about 27 to 28 hours. After reaching Kathgodam take a car or bus to reach Dharchula which is around 10 to 12 hours. The total journey by train and road is nearly two days.

The road journey from Mumbai to Adi Kailash is approximately 1800 to 2100 km which will take two days of driving.The optimal route is from Mumbai to Delhi to Haldwani or Kathgodam to Almora to Pithoragarh and Dharchula. From Dharchula the local 4×4 vehicles take pilgrims through remote, mountainous roads to Gunji and Jyolingkong which are the gateways to Adi Kailash. 

The easiest way is to go with a direct flight from Mumbai to Pantnagar or a train to Kathgodam. From there local buses reach Dharchula which is the base for the Adi Kailash trek. 

What Permits & Documents Need for the Adi Kailash Yatra ?

There is a need for an Inner line permit , Medical Fitness Certificate, Affidavit and some Government documents to take up while travelling to Adi Kailsh. 

  • The Inner Line Permit is a special pass to visit Adi Kailash as this permit is needed because the area is near the border. By showing the permit at checkpoints it keeps the journey safe and legal.
  • Also a Medical Fitness Certificate by doctor before visiting and then, go to the local office in Dharchula with ID and photos. Fill the form, get approval from police and receive the permit to travel.
  • Submit a notarized affidavit which is a written promise on a legal paper that says the journey is taken with full personal responsibility. It also confirms that all government rules will be followed. 
  • There are some important papers to carry which include Aadhaar or voter card, passport size photos and a medical fitness certificate. These documents are like a traveler’s identity for health while trekking.
  • The permit fee is small and valid for 4 to 15 days and Always keep the permit during the trip to pass the security quickly and have smooth travel to Adi Kailash.
